BIOGRAPHY
Mike Rutledge is 56 years old and resides in Bellaire, Texas, a Houston suburb. He and his wife, Peggy, have four children, ages 31, 29, 24 and 22, and four grandchildren. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1971 (earning Phi Beta Kappa distinction), his Master’s degree in Professional Accounting (with a specialization in Taxation) in 1977 and his Doctor of Jurisprudence degree in 1979, all from the University of Texas in Austin. He is a partner with Locke Liddell & Sapp LLP, one of seventy-five largest law firms in the country, where he serves as the chairman of the firm’s Taxation, Trusts & Estates Section. Prior to practicing law, Mike worked in public accounting and is a certified public accountant. He devotes his leisure time to coaching in and administering summer and fall high school baseball programs designed to showcase the talents of promising players in the Greater Houston area and to assist those players in obtaining college scholarships. He founded Houston Kyle Chapman baseball program in the fall of 1988 and has assisted over 300 players in obtaining college scholarships over the past sixteen years. On the national level, Mike has been the manager and/or pitching coach for PONY Baseball’s Palomino team (ages 17-18) in the prestigious USA Baseball Tournament of Stars (formerly the National Amateur All-Star Baseball Tournament) since its inception in 1993. This tournament is held annually and features 144 of the best high school players in the country, competing for roster spots on the USA Junior National team. Mike was most recently the manager of the PONY Baseball team in the 2002 USA Baseball Tournament of Stars held in Joplin, Missouri in June of 2002. In addition, he was named by USA Baseball as its 1997 Amateur Coach of the Year in the State of Texas. Mike’s Houston KC team has advanced to the PONY Palomino World Series nine (9) times (1993, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004), winning the championship in 1993 and 2001 and finishing runner-up in 1999, 2000 and 2003.
